Weather & Geography
London is generally flat with rolling hills to the west and north. The Thames River dominates London's geography as it meets at "the forks" in the middle of the city. Middlesex County is characterized by rolling farmland.
London and Middlesex County enjoy four distinct and beautiful seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall. On average, the weather is comfortable and offers excellent opportunities to enjoy endless outdoor pursuits throughout the year. However, if you are from a tropical climate, be prepared for quite a change once winter comes - and dress warmly!
Below, you will find an expanded explanation of the weather you can expect in each season as well as things to do and clothing requirements.
Winter (December 21 to March 19)
Winter is a season some newcomers may not be used to. The average temperature is -6°C, but it can often get much colder. We typically receive 200 cm (80 inches) of snow over the whole season.
Clothing should include a heavy coat, sweater, gloves, boots and warm hat. For additional warmth, long underwear (long johns) can be worn underneath clothing. It is important to dress warmly to enjoy all of winter's great activities such as skating, snowmobiling, skiing and snowboarding.
Spring (March 20 to June 20)
Spring is a great time to see all of the trees and flowers bloom in the many parks and green spaces around the city and county. Typical daytime highs during the spring can reach 10°C, but it will be cooler at night, requiring you to wear a heavier jacket, hat, gloves and boots.
Spring is a great time to enjoy a nature walk. Our holiday weekend on May 24 signals the official start of gardening season. As the season progresses, you will need lighter clothing, but will still need pants or a skirt and a light jacket until early June.
Summer (June 21 to September 21)
Southwestern Ontario is known for its gorgeous summers. The temperature averages 20°C but can climb to over 30°C.
Summer clothing is typically lighter and many people wear shorts, short-sleeved shirts and sandals. Shorts are not worn in most workplaces. You might still need a light jacket or sweater for cooler nights.
London and Middlesex County come alive in the summer with great outdoor festivals, outdoor swimming, baseball and basketball. Canada Day is a big national celebration on July 1. Beautiful sandy beaches in Grand Bend and Port Stanley are only a 45-minute drive away.
Fall (September 22 to December 21)
Fall, also known as autumn, brings cooler weather. This temperature change causes trees to turn beautiful colours, creating a spectacular display. Average daytime temperatures are between 10°C and 12°C.
Most people continue to wear summer clothing into early Fall. As the weather gets cooler, you will need to add layers such as jackets or sweaters and long-sleeved shirts. Snow can start falling as early as November.
Harvest festivals happen throughout over Middlesex County at this time of year to celebrate the end of the growing season. In October, Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving - a holiday where we give thanks for the good life we enjoy.
